I’m an outerwear kinda girl from oversized cardigans to my current and forever obsession, blazers. I had to show off another one of my favorite thrifted blazers. Purple isn’t really one of those colors I go for but for this piece, it was a no brainer. It’s one of those items that can pretty much stand alone so I kept everything else simple and cute.
The funny thing is that I actually bought the shoulder bag a couple of hours before this shoot after my mom and I randomly stopped at The Cottage Shop, a local thrift store that gives it’s proceeds to The Women’s Home who help women rebuild their lives through programs and housing.
Theirs no better feeling than giving back and getting something great in return. A lot of people always ask questions on why and how I thrift so I wanted to mention why I shop at thrift stores and why you should too.
Wear Stand Out Pieces
Even though I love classic pieces and simple neutral palettes, I also like stand out pieces. Just like when you’re looking for conversational furniture pieces for the house, why not own a few conversational clothing pieces. I’m always on the hunt when shopping at thrift stores and resale shops, like what will I find next. Why look like everyone else in the room.
Shop For a Greater Cause
Just like Goodwill and Salvation Army, many local thrift stores give their proceeds to a greater cause. Like previously mentioned, I got this shoulder bag from a local local store where it’s proceeds help struggling women with housing, programs, and other life changing initiatives. Look at it this way, not only are you finding great additions to your closet but helping others in need all at the same time. Other than that it’s always great to support your local family owned businesses.
Saves You Money!
My favorite part about shopping at thrift stores is the savings. Don’t get me wrong I love trendy stores like Zara, H&M, and even Nordstrom when I’m feeling fancy but seeing all that money leaving the back aint cute! One of my favorite thrift stores to shop at is Family Thrift who also has ‘half off everything’ on Wednesdays. The prices are so cheap that I can buy a bag full of clothes, about 6-8 pieces, for $50-$60 compared to that being 2 or 3 things from somewhere like Zara. The misconception is that thrift store clothing is not good quality however I always seem to find well-known brands and some of the best quality items for the low.
Another way to save money is selling your no longer wanted clothes to resale shops like Buffalo Exchange where they offer cash back but more money if you take store credit. I obviously take the store credit so it’s kind of like an exchange. You’re getting rid of something old for something new… well at least new to you.
