Why I Did It
I’ve been natural for some time and have experienced the ups and downs, the good and the bad when it comes to being natural. See my full hair journey here. I was laying in bed one night with my hair in a bun scratching because I had procasitnated so long on washing it. I suddenly had the random thought of cutting it off. I had seen cute natural hair cuts on Pinterest and even followers on Instagram and I loved it so why not?! I had been wanting a different look for some time anyways and didn’t know what to do so a cut was perfect idea. People always thought I was much younger so I seen this as the perfect opportunity to look more mature and edgier but still feminine. I told myself if I still wanted to cut my hair in 2 weeks I would go for it.
2 weeks flew by before I knew it and my mind was still made up. I only told two co-workers about my huge decision. It was extremely hard not to tell anybody but I kept it a secret because I didn’t want anybody to try and talk me out of it. I knew this was what I wanted and nothing was going to stop me. All natural girls with the amount of hair I had can feel my pain. Having so much hair is like a part time job. It requires time, work, and money. My go-to look with a bun and I realized it was my crutch. Whenever I didn’t want to do anything to my hair, the bun was the first option and after so long that got old. So why not a change. I found the perfect person do it. She was experienced with natural hair and best of all she had just cut her hair into a similar style a few weeks prior so I knew she would understand.
The Process
I can honestly say I wasn’t nervous. I was ready! The process was actually pretty quick and painless. My beautician talked me through every step.
1. Wet the hair before cutting – This made the initial cut easier.
2. Cut with scissors – (2nd picture)
3. Cut the side and back with clippers – Since the sides and back are tapered she used clippers.
4. Cut top – The top was cut with scissors for the right shape.
5. Twist out on top – To get the curly look at the top we did a twist out by using a mixture of Eco-Styler gel and a moisturizing hair lotion.
6. Dryer – I sat under the dryer for about an hour and a half.
7. Wash and go for sides and back – We did a wash and go for the sides and back. The top was already dry. Letting the wash and go air dry helps the hair not become crispy from the gel.
Post Hair Cut
I couldn’t wait to see the reactions from everyone especially since nobody knew what I was up to. After the initial shock, they loved it. I got a lot of compliments and ‘OMG I can’t believe you did it!’ reactions. I explained to many that I did this for me, not anybody else. People might not understand but IT’S JUST HAIR!!!! Once you been there, done that things get old and it’s time for a change. Time for something different.
Cutting my hair represented the beginning of a new journey.
