Every time a new season is approaching I feel the need to do all kinds of Instagram searching, Pinterest obsessing, and stalking my favorite blogs for the newest trends all while creating a mental list of items I want.
Realistically I can’t have everything I really want so I always follow these four rules in transition to the new season when it comes to shopping for items I must have.
Shop with a Plan
Create a list of items you want and stick to it! I’m easy to buy a whole bunch of stuff I don’t need because it’s on sale or clearance. I’ve been making more of an effort to shop for things I can actually see myself wearing for multiple occasions for example work to evening events or weekend festivities. Buying stuff because ‘maybe I’ll wear it later’ is a easy way to fill your closet with items you don’t need.
Only Splurge on Classic Pieces
This one is a oldie but goodie rule of thumb that’s been held true time and time again. I will never spend a large amount of money on an item I couldn’t see myself wearing two and three years from then. It’s not worth it.
Set Budget
Probably the most important rule because the last thing we want to do is spend our hair money, or even worse, our rent money on trying to be cute. Having a list of items to get is first, setting a budget is second because now you know what all you can and can’t get. Maybe you wanted three pair of new jeans, a floral print dress, and a new bold color bag to make a statement for the season. After setting a budget, realistically you might only be able to buy one pair of jeans instead of three and that dress might need to come from Zara not Saks.
Setting a budget also allows you to determine where to shop. We all like to wish and hope that we can walk into Nordstrom and ball out but maybe this year your budget is only for TJMAXX, and nothing is wrong with that.
Shop Alone
We all love having a shopping date with the girls but that’s not always a good idea when we trying get right for the new season. For one, friends tend to point out stuff you don’t need and just because they say it looks good on us we feel we have to get it. Peer pressure, right?!
Second, there’s nothing like a good and peaceful shopping experience where we can shop alone, stick to our plan, and stay on budget.
